This workshop will cover the basics of writing code to generate print-ready generative artworks. We will cover the basics of programming in Processing, some standard algorithmic techniques for generative art and the workflow process to generate print-ready PDFs. The workshop will conclude in a survey of different printing methods, from laser jet to CNC drawing and vinyl plotter. At the end of the two evenings, we'll finish the workshop with everyone bringing home a triptych of their algorithms from a basic laserjet.

What you will need to bring?
Laptop and charger

What will you take home?
Understanding of how numbers become images through code
Basics of programming in Processing
A set of digital prints based on generative techniques

Schedule
This workshop takes place over two consecutive evenings. You can attend one part independently of the other, but we highly recommend attending both.

Day 1
- Basics of Processing and drawing simple shapes
- Using loops and control flow to generate visuals
- Building unique shapes from vertices

Day 2
- Using controlled noise in generative drawings
- Programming an export workflow
- Exporting vector files from Processing

Instructor

Pierre Depaz is a teacher, programmer and artist. A lecturer of interactive media at New York University in Berlin, he also writes software and designs hardware for galleries, museums and artists who don’t know (yet!) how to do so. On the theoretical side, his research focuses on the digitalization of public spaces and the aesthetics of source code. On the practical side, his artworks explore the computer representations of complex human interactions, and have been shown in New York City, Paris, Berlin, Montreal, Cairo, Abu Dhabi and Pori.

In this workshop, we will work with body-safe alginate and learn how to cast feet/hands. We make solid molds with alginate and carefully fill them with plaster, wait for the plaster to harden, and then carefully remove the mold from the alginate. We rework the plaster moulds and learn how to paint and seal them.

You will learn:
-how to use alginate, what it can do
-how to mix plaster
-how to repair plaster

What we provide:
All materials will be provided by the organizers.

What you should bring?
- Clothes that can get messy
- Mask - because of Corona but also to protect yourself from any fine-dust.

What will you take home?
At the end of the course you will be able to take home your sample finger and a cast of your hand or foot.

This is a workshop using water-based resin for students who want to learn how to laminate with fibreglass or just cast a beautiful leaf. This workshop is about the very important process of laminating materials. It can be used in a number of material applications, but we will be working with water-based acrylic polymer, known by many names such as polymer gypsum, Jesmoninate, Acrystal, etc. Essentially it is a high quality gypsum binder and the liquid component is a water based acrylic resin dispersion. We will explore the aspects of the material by creating a print of a leaf. By the end of the course you will have a cast leaf and have an in-depth knowledge of the sculptural process of laminating.

You will learn:
- The principles of lamination
- One very useful way of working with Eco Resins

What we provide:
All materials will be provided

What you will need to bring?
